Apparemment disparu de France, le nom se rencontre au Québec et plus généralement en Amérique du Nord. Il renvoie certainement à un toponyme, désignant soit un mont "brillant" (?), soit la colline appartenant à un nommé Briand (nom de personne breton). Faute de données généalogiques, on se contentera de citer les lieux suivants, qui peuvent tous correspondre : Montbrilland, hameau à Septmoncel (39). Montbrillant, hameau à La Chapelle-Naude (71). Le château de Montbrian(d) à Messimy-sur-Saône (01). Enfin Montbrien à Montmarault (03) et à La Verdière (83). Autrement dit, rien de breton, ce qui devrait permettre d'éliminer déjà la seconde hypothèse.
